NANOG is a transcription factor critically involved with self-renewal of undifferentiated embryonic stem cells . It is encoded by the NANOG gene.
It is thought to function in concert with other factors such as Oct-4 and SOX2 to establish embryonic stem cell identity. It imposes pluripotency on ES cells and prevents their differentiation towards extraembryonic endoderm and trophectoderm lineages.
NANOG, has been identified and is also expressed in human ES and embryonic carcinoma cells
